Considerations for Selecting AIs

How is your data passed along, tracked, and captured?

How transparent and honest is the AI organization now and in its history regarding using and protecting personal, public, and collective information?

How was the AI's data acquired, and how were its sources compensated?

Does the AI's training data involve the "filching" of user data?[ii] How does the organization justify the use of this data?

What AI sources of content and truth are used?

How does the AI platform demonstrate genuine openness and avoid "openwashing"?

With AI, we cannot hand over the definition of usage or await proper regulation. We cannot “lose the name of action” as Hamlet does.[i] This means choosing AI platforms that prioritize transparency and integrity in their learning processes and allow us to define usage on our terms. Before adopting a generative AI, consider the following key questions:

We know from experience with social media platforms that this does not work. The troubling history of some organizations' influence on social media—prioritizing profit over user well-being and contributing to the spread of misinformation—underscores the urgent need to prevent, or at least forestall, similar patterns from emerging in the AI domain. Their conduct should be a major factor in disqualifying them, or at least severely limiting or forestalling their selection, for AI usage. By carefully selecting and supporting AI platforms that have not only a commitment to ethical development, user privacy, and the long-term health of our society but also a proven track record of responsible conduct with our data, we can steer AI's evolution toward a future that benefits humanity.

Assisting Intelligence

Assisting Intelligence is about being authentic with the assistance of an AI. This book started as an experiment to learn more about generative AI while researching a book on an entirely different topic. For Assisting Intelligence, I tried to incorporate the use of AIs into each stage of the writing process. I found that it could accelerate brainstorming; however, the real research, writing, perspective, and most of the content had to be created outside of an AI, made with authentic sources, and curated independently. For any improvement an AI offered, it detracted from what was authentic and real about my content—my ethos, perspective, and insight.

The hallucinations and shenanigans in this book are entirely my own. One of the challenges and joys of writing in the AI era is finding ways to create content that AI simply cannot replicate. This is what makes this book unique and the perspective my own. I tested ideas, sought alternative arguments from AI, improved grammar and editing, and had fun crafting prompts that challenged the deep-learning neural network to think more like I do.
